Is Sports Betting Legal in New Mexico 2023?

New Mexico sports betting is legal in the state but only with licensed sports retailers. New Mexico doesn’t have any professional sports teams, so they must resort on placing bets on college teams or out-of-state pro teams at retailers like Santa Ana.

New Mexico’s Tribal Casinos don’t accept wagers from in-state college teams. New Mexicans are free to place those college bets, and other sports bets like prized fighting, boxing, tennis, and motor racing at one of our listed sportsbooks.

When will Betting be Legal in New Mexico?

New Mexico sports betting is legal provided that it goes through a licensed retailer at a Tribal Casino. There was a previous bill last year that was designed to expand sports betting throughout the entire state, but that measure failed.

October 16, 2018 The Tribal Gaming Compact Legalized Sports Betting in New Mexico

New Mexico became the sixth state in the country to sanction sports gambling on October 16, 2018. This was made possible without New Mexico’s congress passing legislation. In 2001, New Mexico successfully negotiated the right to grant Tribal Casinos the right to operate as sports gambling retailers.

Since that pact, five Tribal Casinos are successfully operating in New Mexico.

Supporters

The Indian Tribes were strongly lobbying for sanctioned sports gambling in New Mexico. This was before the Supreme Court struck down the PAPSA law in 2018.

Opponents

New Mexico’s State Congress remains divided on the legality of sports betting in the Land of Enchantment. 2021 saw one measure to legalize sports betting throughout the state, but they ultimately didn’t go anywhere.

Sports Betting Guides State by State

New Mexico Sports Betting Bills

In 2021 New Mexico put forth a measure to officially legislate organized sports gambling. We highlight that measure.

2021

  • HB 101 – A measure designed to create a committee to oversee and regulate sports gambling in New Mexico. The measure doesn’t go anywhere.

Tax on Sports Winnings in New Mexico

The State of New Mexico imposes a tax excise of 10%, known as the gaming tax. Gross receipts belonging to gaming device manufacturers and the distributors of gaming devices are taxed in this way.

In addition, New Mexico taxes gambling winnings. This tax consists of a 26% tax on gaming, a 20% tax on racing purses, and a 0.25% tax related to problem gambling.

New Mexicans face a six percent tax on net sports winnings. New Mexico hasn’t formally passed any specific legislation for sports gambling taxes. The six percent refers to the regular state income tax.

Payment Methods Available at the Best New Mexico Online Sports Betting Sites

Offshore sportsbooks strive to have a variety of user-friendly banking options. We touch on common banking options like credit cards, Bitcoin, and eWallets that process payments instantly.

Crypto Betting Options

Bitcoin is the centerpiece of cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin comes with numerous advantages. It is free to use and set up, and it negates users having to fill out a credit card authorization form.

Instead, users have to set up a certified Bitcoin wallet on their preferred device and then set up the crypto signatures. Finally, convert some funds into Bitcoin, or mine some to fill your wallet.

In addition to Bitcoin, our sportsbooks offer additional cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, Dogecoin, and Litecoin. Therese measures operate the same as Bitcoin.

BetOnline Bitcoin Payout

eWallet Betting Options

eWallets are growing in popularity and availability at offshore sportsbooks. eWallets are free to use and simple to set up. Major eWallets like Neteller and Skrill only require an email address and a way to fund it. Bovada provides multiple eWallets, along with the voucher, Zelle.

Traditional Payment Methods at New Mexico Betting Sites

Credit cards are a standard banking option and the same for wire transfer services. Visa and MasterCard are the staple credit card options. But many offshore sportsbooks including Bovada and BetOnline, have American Express and Discover Card.

It is recommended to submit a credit card form to the cashier after registration because it is a lengthy process to get them approved. Money transfer services are available. These methods incur a fee and don’t process deposits instantly.

Betting Bonuses Available at the Top New Mexico Sportsbooks

Offshore sportsbooks bolster their members winning chances with a host of sports promotions. From the welcome, and reloads, to sports contests, we break down the common sports bonuses awaiting members.

The Sports Welcome

The sports welcome is the most common bonus awaiting members. After registration, we recommend checking the promotional section to avoid missing out on the generous welcome prizes. BetUS leads the pack with a dedicated 100% matching bonus up to $2,500. BetOnline follows suit with a generous 50% matching worth up to $1,000.

California sportsbooks like BetOnline make it easy to learn how to bet on the NBA All-Star Game

Live Risk-Free Bets

Players can bet on futures before the game happens, but they make live sports bets. Live sports betting is a sophisticated component of an online casino. To help new members break the ice and place their first live bet, betting sites like BetOnline offer risk-freer bets. BetOnline’s $25 risk-free applies to major pro and collegiate sports.

BetOnline Masters Player Prop Bets

Sports Reload Promotions

Making any type of sports wager incurs an expense, that is not always going to bear fruit. To keep their members encouraged, sports betting sites, including the ones in this guide, offer sports reload or rebates.

These bonuses work automatically by returning a percentage of previous losses back their players accounts. BetOnline, BetUS and XBet offer exceptional sports reload prizes.

BetOnline sports reload bonus

Exclusive Horse Racing Promotions

Horse racing, both live and virtual, is an essential part of any offshore sportsbook. Like regular sports betting, not all horse racing wagers will be winners. Premier betting sites like BetOnline provide a $25 risk-free bet for live horse racing wagers. XBet and BetOnline also provide seven percent and nine percent daily horse rebates, respectively.

BetOnline Horse Racing

The Sports Contests

Major sports like college basketball, and college football, bring out special sports contests. There are also unique sports contests for individual sports like tennis and golf. Common sports contests include NCAA Tournament brackets, the NBA and NFL playoffs, Wimbledon, etc.

Bets that are Illegal in New Mexico

Even though the State of New Mexico has arrangements with Indian Tribe for retail sports betting, you still can’t gamble on in-state college sports. For that, you can turn to one of our offshore sportsbooks.

How New Mexico Online Sports Betting Ranks to its Neighbors

New Mexico sports betting is only sanctioned at licensed Tribal Casinos. If you reside by one, you can place bets there. But if you don’t live by a Tribal Casino, you might have to venture to a nearby state. New Mexicans can turn to Colorado sportsbooks as long as they are licensed. In Colorado, you can wager on New Mexico’s college teams.

If you reside by Arizona, then Arizona’s sportsbooks are in play. This state accepts all professional and collegiate sports. This is another way for Arizonans to wager on their college teams. Oklahomans will have to wait at least another year for the chance of Oklahoma sportsbooks becoming legal. A recent bill failed to pass.

California sportsbooks are still illegal, but there is some positive momentum to change that. Right now, there is tremendous passion and momentum from sports teams like the Dallas Cowboys, to legalize Texas Sports betting.

New Mexico Casinos with Sports Betting

Ever since the Santa Ana Casino became the inaugural sports casino In New Mexico, more have opened brick and mortar gambling locations. Here is a rundown of some of the other Tribal Casinos accepting sports wagers.

  • Buffalo Thunder Resort
  • Isleta Resort and Casino
  • Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Casino
  • Hilton Buffalo Thunder Casino in Santa Fe
  • Route 66 Casino in Albuquerque
