How Does Horse Racing Betting Work in New Jersey?

Betting on horse racing in New Jersey will feel the same regardless of your chosen method. The form guide will be your best friend for analyzing horses and picking a winner, while both simulcast machines and online horse racing betting sites will require punters to place their wagers using a race card. Punters in New Jersey can access both Pari-Mutuel and fixed odds betting.

New Jersey Horse Racing Betting Explained

Anytime you place a wager on horse racing in New Jersey, you’ll be using a race card. A race card is a simple form in which punters can make their betting selections. Online New Jersey horse racing betting sites are a great example of a simple race card.

Sportsbetting.ag race card

Click on a race from the racebook and you’ll open the race card. Within the race card, you’ll be able to see all the horses that are running, and which bet types are available. When a selection has been made, it will appear in the online betting slip.

Horse Racing Betting Odds

When it comes to actually making money betting on horse racing in New Jersey, there is nothing more important than the betting odds. Odds dictate how much money can be won wagering on a particular market and they provide a good indication of market sentiment. There are three types of horse racing betting odds in New Jersey – fixed, pool, and Pari-Mutuel.

Fixed Odds for Horse Racing Betting in New Jersey

Fixed odds are the type of odds you’ll see betting on other sports like basketball, football, or tennis. It’s also a great way for beginners to bet on horse racing if they don’t have an understanding of Pari-Mutuel wagering. When you place a fixed-odds bet your odds cannot fluctuate as they can in Pari-Mutuel betting.

Pari-Mutuel Betting in New Jersey

This is the main way that US states have authorized legal horse racing betting for decades and today it is still the most common way of betting on horse racing in New Jersey. Pari-Mutuel betting sees all the wagers from a number of entrants placed into a pool and a dividend is calculated. Payouts are then determined by the size of your stake in the pool.

Pool Betting on New Jersey Horse Races

Basically identical to Pari-Mutuel betting except that Pool Betting is reserved for exotic wagers like Daily Doubles and Exactas.

What Are The Different Types of Horse Racing Bets?

There is more to betting on horse racing in New Jersey than simply backing the winner. The Sport of Kings actually has many unique wager types and with some careful studying of the form guide, there are plenty of opportunities to pick up a win without betting on a horse to win the race.

Win

A simple wager on a single horse to win a single race.

Place

A place is a bet on a horse to place either 1st or 2nd in a single race. Even if the horse wins the race, the payout will be the same as when it places 2nd.

Show

The show is a bet on a horse to finish anywhere in the top 3. It doesn’t matter if the horse wins the race or comes in 3rd, the payout will be the same.

Exacta

The Exacta is an exotic wager in which you must correctly predict the exact finish of 1st and 2nd place in a race. The order is important here – you must back 1st and 2nd place in the exact order.

Trifecta

Much like the Exacta bet, a Trifecta is the correct prediction of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the exact order.

Superfecta

The Superfecta is just an extension of the Trifecta in which you must pick the first four places of a single race in the correct order. You must predict 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place to win the bet.

Daily Double

The Daily Double is a wager on not just a single race but two races from a single meeting. This is a bet on the first two races of a single meeting. You must correctly back the winner of each race to win the bet.

Pick 3/4/5/6

If you have the confidence to bet on more than 2 races in a meeting then you can choose a Pick Bet. The numbers of the Pick Bet represent how many races you’ll be wagering on. So, a Pick 3 is a bet on the winners of the first 3 races, a Pick 5 would be the winners of the first 5 races, and so on.

Bet Type Description Bet Cost Minimum Bet
Win Overall winner of the race $2 $2
Place To finish inside the top 2 places $2 $2
Show To finish inside the top 3 places $2 $2
Exacta First two horses are in the correct order $1 $1
Trifecta First three horses in the correct order $1 $1
Superfecta First four horses in the correct order $0.10 $0.10
Daily Double Winner of two consecutive races from the same meeting $2 $2
Pick 3 Winner of three consecutive races from the same meeting $2 $2
Pick 4 Winner of four consecutive races from the same meeting $1 $1
Pick 5 Winner of five consecutive races from the same meeting $0.50 $0.50
Pick 6 Winner of six consecutive races from the same meeting $0.10 $0.10

New Jersey Horse Racing Betting Terms

If you’ve ever walked into a sports bar and heard the racing call from NBC sports and been a little lost, it’s probably because horse racing has a lot of unique terms and phrases you won’t hear in any other sport. Some of these terms can be found in a form guide to and during any analysis guides provided by experts.

  • Across the board– A bet on a single horse to win, place, and show.
  • Dead Heat – This is the term used when two horses finish at the very same time.
  • DQ– this is a horse that’s been disqualified for any reason.
  • Exotic bet – Any bet that is not a win, place, or show is called an exotic bet. For example, an Exacta, Superfecta, or Daily Double.
  • Furlong– 1/8th of a mile
  • Length– Distance between horses as they cross the finish line. For example, “She won by 3 lengths”.
  • Morning Line – Handicappers provide an estimate of what the odds on each horse will be before the start of the race.
  • Purse– This is the amount of money up for grabs for horse owners or trainers if they win that particular race.

New Jersey Horse Racing Betting Calculator

Calculations are not something you’ll need to think about since online sportsbooks handle all the calculations for you. However, should you wish to crunch the numbers yourself, there are tools to help you out.

Just use your favorite search engines like Google or Bing and look for a Horse Racing Betting Calculator. You’ll easily find a bunch online for free. Input the details of your bet and the calculator will pump out your probability of betting odds in a matter of seconds.

How To Calculate Horse Racing Betting Odds

Calculating Pari-Mutuel betting odds payouts is easier than you might think. At the end of a race, the number of entrants to the pool will be divided by the total value of the bets placed into that pool. So, for example, a $2,000 pool with 10 entrants would have a dividend of $200. Your payout will depend on how much you bet into the pool – for example, 2 units would net you a $400 payout.

Freehold Raceway

Opened in 1854, but hosted races dating back to the 1830s, Freehold Raceway is famously the site of the very first photo finish – the dead heat occurred during a harness race in 1953. However, today you won’t see any major meetings at Freehold, but races are still held every weekend for 9 months of the year.

Comparing Betting At The Racetrack With Online Horse Racing Betting

Both online horse racing and on-track simulcast betting have their own unique advantages. However, there are plenty more reasons to choose an online horse racing betting site over on-track betting. Simulcast machines very rarely offer better odds than what you can find online, and you can’t shop around for odds like you can by signing up to multiple New Jersey horse racing betting sites online.

Online bookies also offer handy bonuses such as rebates and enhanced odds that can be taken advantage of for a reduction of losses or bigger payouts. With that being said, for betting on races held in New Jersey, the track is tough to beat – you can watch the parade ring which can provide unique insights into the prospective performances of the horses that day.

Comparing Betting At The Racetrack With Online Horse Racing Betting

Betting at an OTB Online Horse Racing Betting

General Terms and Conditions at Horse Racing Betting Sites in New Jersey

Stick around and the best bookies offer consistent bonuses and promotional offers throughout the year too. New Jersey Horse Racing Betting Bonuses

The best New Jersey horse racing betting sites that made our list all offer regular bonuses each week. They may change throughout the year but there is almost always an offer to take advantage of. Bonuses can come in many different forms, so it’s a good idea to understand how the most common bonuses work before you consider picking one up while betting on horse racing in New Jersey.

Welcome Bonus

Whenever you sign-up at a New Jersey horse racing betting site for the first time, you’ll likely be offered a welcome bonus. This is the biggest bonus a bookie will ever offer you and can be worth upwards of $3,000 in some cases. The welcome offer is commonly a matched deposit bonus in which the bookie matches your deposit with bonus funds. For example, a 100% matched deposit of $1,000 would see the bookie deposit $1,000 in additional bonus funds.

Free Bet

There is no better bonus than a horse racing free bet if you like to bet on the ponies. The free bet bonus is an offer of a small wager that the bookie pays the stake for. It’s typically a small bet – 2 – $5 – but you’ll get all the profits if the bet is a winner. You’ll also see this bonus referred to as a Risk-Free bet by some online New Jersey horse racing betting sites.

Cashback/Rebate/Money-Back

The most common of all horse racing bonuses, the horse racing rebate offer provides cashback to the punter for a set number of losing bets. The offer will be on qualifying wagers only – determined by the bookie in the terms and conditions – and is usually for around 8 – 10%.

Enhanced Odds

Enhanced odds are where a bookie increases the odds for a specific race, meeting, or market for a promotional period. Usually, this occurs during major race meetings such as the Farm Hills Steeplechase.

Virtual Horse Racing Betting in New Jersey

Horses get tired which means races can’t be available 24/7. However, virtual horse racing picks up the slack. Virtual horse racing provides very short races that run regularly and never stop. These are digital races – like a video game – with outcomes determined by a random number generator.

New Jersey horse racing betting apps are available on iOS and Android devices which means you can take your horse racing betting platform with you and you’ll never be stuck when that last-minute hot tip comes through.

New Jersey Horse Racing Betting Apps for iPhone

Users of iOS devices like iPhones and iPads can very easily download and use their favorite New Jersey horse racing betting app by heading to the iOS App Store. New Jersey Horse Racing Betting Apps for Android

Most Android devices running Android 8 and above should have no problem using any of the best New Jersey horse racing betting apps like BetOnline. You won’t find those bookies on Google Play though. Thanks to some strict opinions about gambling in the US, Google doesn’t like to host gambling apps.
