Alan Draper profile picture

Although South Dakota has a historic reputation as a gambling state, the truth is that there is currently very little action available for horse racing bettors. What is available is Live Thoroughbred and Quarter horse racing which takes place only once a year at a couple of state fairs. There’s also some off-track betting available which we have discussed further on this page. The good news is that there are plenty of high-quality online gambling sites for South Dakota bettors which we have highlighted below.

Comparing The Best Sites For Horse Racing South Dakota Has To Offer

When we reviewed these betting sites, we also compared how they do against each other. We have done so by taking key features and then testing to see how they work. These are features that all or most of the South Dakota horse racing sites should have so that we can compare them easily.

Horse Racing Odds

When it comes to betting on horse racing, some sportsbooks offer better odds than others. With a price match guarantee, BetOnline offers better odds at the racetrack than any of its rivals. Meanwhile, GTbets tend to post worse odds and have fewer markets than their competitors.

Live Horse Racing Betting

Live horse racing betting is a sport that can tell a lot as a race is happening and for this to happen, you need to find a site that runs quickly and smoothly. Also, it should allow you to see changes to the odds without having to refresh the page. When it comes to live horse racing in South Dakota, some of the best sites for live horse betting are Xbet and MyBookie.

Horse Racing Betting Promotions

A huge advantage of gambling sites, sportsbooks, and online casinos in South Dakota are that they offer a range of promotions. Some of them are even linked to horse racing specifically. As an example, Xbet has a 75 Horse Rebate offer on qualified tracks.

Special Features for Horse Racing

When a website has special features, it sets them apart from the rest. Some of these features might include betting picks, predictions, live streaming, and promotions specifically for horse racing. Many of our most recommended sites have their own set of unique features. Some sites with special features that we would like to point out are BetUS for its live streaming platform, Bovada for its horse racing picks, and BetOnline for its interactive race card.

User-Friendly Design

A user-friendly design has become more important than ever and is high up on the list. Horse racing is a type of gambling that requires more time spend on the site than most because of the number of races and data that you can access. That’s why it’s important for the site to look appealing and to perform well.

We have rated Bovada as one of the most modern, sleek horse racing sites. Their platform has been designed to keep things single without too much going on in and around it. This is also true for their mobile betting app.

Live Streaming

Live streaming is an amazing feature for online bettors. These streams will cover races held within the US as well as some offering international races as well. Players in South Dakota can sign up for an account at BetUS, where they have a feature called BetUS TV which includes live streaming of races around the world. Additionally, you’ll have access to racing picks and predictions.

How To Choose The Best South Dakota Horse Racing Betting Sites

With so many options out there nowadays, we aren’t surprised that it can be difficult to decide, even when it comes to horse racing betting sites. Here we have included a variety of features that you need to look out for when choosing the horse racing betting site that suits you best.

Brand Recognition

Brand recognition is an important aspect when it comes to online betting sites because you need to know they are reputable, credible, and trustworthy. And since you are depositing real money and making real money bets with your accounts, you want to make sure it’s with a brand that you can rely on.

That said, all of the sites we have listed on this page are reputable and have been established for several years with tons of experience.

Payment Methods

It’s always a good idea to check out the choice of payment options that a site has to offer and if they suit how you want to bank. It’s also important to look for any fees for these payment methods and if there are, what are they. We recommend avoiding payment methods that charge you fees, especially for deposits.

Safety & Security

This is a big one. Firstly, your chosen betting site should be able to prove its safety and security with things like SSL certificates and legitimate licensing. All our recommended sites are both safe and secure. Additionally, to a safe site, you should create a unique username and password for your betting accounts.

Speed & Design

From experience, we find that the most well-organized sites make a better betting experience overall, especially when it comes to horse racing. When it comes to speed and design, we look for sites that don’t lag, are easy on the eyes, and that has a remarkable menu system that allows you to navigate your way through the site quickly and easily.

Customer Service

Customer service is something that shouldn’t be overlooked especially when it comes to wagering your money online. So, with that said, we have tested every support team in our reviews to make sure that they have high standards when it comes to customer service as well. We tested the customer service by seeing how long it takes to respond how well they both can deal with the inquiry and how they managed to find a solution.

Overall Value

These are all important factors that contribute to the overall package that an online betting site has to offer. Since there are a good number of sites to choose from and most of them are very good, it’s important to be able to point out any weak points they might have.

On this page, we have outlined the best horse racing betting sites in South Dakota considering the above points being applied to all online gambling sites in our list. The chart below gives an overview of what we have looked at for each point in hopes you can use it as part of your checklist, too.

Horse racing is legal in South Dakota. The horse racing industry has a small but long history in South Dakota which all started way back in the 1950s. The horse racetracks in Fort Pierre and Aberdeen have offered limited events up until 2019 and since then, it has slowed down. There’s also an off-track betting facility called Triple Crown Casino that operates in North Sioux City, where bettors can place off-track wagering on races throughout the United States. That said, offline and online betting on horses is fully legal within South Dakota. And, the most common pari-mutuel betting types are Win, Place, Show, Trifecta, Exacta, and Superfecta.

How Does Horse Racing Betting Work in South Dakota?

Horse racing betting works by picking a race that you want to bet on. It’s best to try and pick a race that’s relatively popular if you’re new to wagering on horse races. You also need to do some research to make your pick. Most horse racing sites will allow you to access betting tools that will help you with this. Betting picks and news articles are great features on some of these sites. But if they don’t, you can also try to do a quick google search for the picks on that race, and some articles should appear. And if it’s too overwhelming, you can always see who most people are backing and go with that. It’s a learning experience and these steps will help you to make moves and learn the ropes.

Then, once you have chosen your pick, use the racecard to place your bet. You can choose between a range of markets such as win, place, and show. You may also get to choose mixed bets like exacta, trifecta, and superfecta.

The odds are often displayed as a pool and then you get a dividend on that pool. Also, some sites may include a morning line price, which is an estimate of what the odds for that horse will be before the start of the race.

South Dakota Horse Racing Betting Explained

One of the easiest ways for us to try and explain how horse racing betting works is to look at an example of a race card.

Bovada Racecard Example

This image shows an upcoming race and to the left is the place number and to the right of this is the horse’s name and jockey name. To the right of this is the Morning Line and finally, to the further right are boxes for Win, Place, and Show. These are the bets you can place on the race.

You’ll notice that the morning line is represented as fractional odds. If you haven’t used these before, the number in the right column is the amount you need to stake to make the number in the left column. For example, with a 4/1 price, that would mean for every $1 you place, you win $4. To place this bet, you need to enter your stake in either of the win, place or show columns. Then, click on “add to bet slip” once you’ve done this and confirm.

Horse Racing Betting Odds

It’s important to remember that the odds that you get are very important. Also, features add to the experience but if you’re not getting the best possible price, you’re not maximizing your return. As for the best-proven horse racing betting sites in South Dakota, we’d recommend BetOnline and Bovada. They both have low margins while BetOnline excels in popular bets that are often a shade higher than most. And Bovada is the best for longer-priced horses given the vast number of recreational bettors who use their site.

The three types of betting odds you can expect for horse racing in South Dakota are listed below.

Fixed Odds for Horse Racing Betting in South Dakota

Fixed odds are where the betting site sets the price. But they can also move the price. This is the most common form of odds for almost all sports betting apart from horse racing. Fixed odds are displayed as fractional or sometimes American. Also, some sports betting sites will offer a morning line price for pool betting, which should be used as a guide as this might not be the final price that you get.

Talk about fixed horse racing betting odds and link to our main Horse Racing page below.

Pari-Mutuel Betting in South Dakota

Pari-mutuel betting is where you bet into a pool and a dividend is rewarded at the end of the race. All the money is invested into the pool and then the betting site distributes it based on how many people are in that winning pool and how much you’ve wagered.

Pool Betting on South Dakota Horse Races

Pool betting is a form of pari-mutuel wagering and is very similar to it in many ways. However, with pool betting, bettors pay into a pool instead of giving their money to a bookmaker. Essentially, the money is pooled together and shared among those who wagered on the winning selection.

What Are The Different Types of Horse Racing Bets?

Every race comes with a set of bets that you can place wagers on. We have listed some of the most popular bets that you will come across at the top horse racing betting sites in South Dakota.

Win

A win bet is the most popular and is where you bet on the overall winner of the race. It is a single bet, and your horse must win to get paid.

Place

The place bet is where you select a horse to finish in either first or second place.

Show

A show bet is where your horse can finish anywhere in the top three places. The order doesn’t matter for either the show or place bets as the payout will be the same regardless.

Exacta

The exacta bet is where you pick the two horses to finish in 1st or 2nd place, and in the correct order.

Trifecta

The trifecta bet is where you pick the three horses to finish 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, in the correct order.

Superfecta

A superfecta bet is where you pick four horses to finish in the correct order for the top four spots.

Daily Double

A Daily Double bet is where you need to pick the winner of the first two races of a meeting.

Pick 3/4/5/6

Pick bets are extensions of the Daily Double and include the number of races per pick number. For instance, a Pick 3 bet would need the winners of the first three races at that meeting while a Pick 4 would need the winner of the first races.

The chart below gives you a quick overview of each of these bets and how they work.

Comparing the Different Types of Bets for Horse Racing in South Dakota
Bet Type Description
Win Overall winner of the race
Place To finish in the top 2 places
Show To finish in the top 3 places
Exacta First two horses in the correct order
Trifecta First three horses in the correct order

Pick 6 Winner of six consecutive races from the same meeting

South Dakota Horse Racing Betting Terms

It doesn’t have to be difficult to bet on horses and it can be learned by anyone. But there are a fair number of terms to know that are used specifically in this industry. Many simple words are replaced with horse racing terms, so for the best experience, it’s a good idea to read up on what some of these terms are so that you aren’t completely confused when it’s time to place your bets and follow along with how the race(s) is going.

Horse Racing Betting Terms Explained:

South Dakota Horse Racing Betting Calculator

Many online sports betting sites will calculate the horse racing odds for you, so you won’t have to worry about them too much. However, since many sportsbooks work with pools or pari-mutuel betting types, this means that you won’t get to see the final odds until the end of the race when the pools have been counted.

There are ways that you can approximately work them out. The first method is by working out the percentage of money staked on your horse and then using a betting calculator to then alter that into an implied probability and then into odds. There are some sites that will give you the chance to switch between bet totals and percentages so that it’s easier if you can take the percentage and put that straight into the calculator.

Another thing to keep in mind is that many sites will include morning line odds. These are predictions that are made by experts on the day of the race as to the possible price. They are not exact, but they can be used as a guide. Usually, they are not too far off so they are worth paying attention to.

How To Calculate Horse Racing Betting Odds

The odds are calculated when the races are finished. It boils down to the amount of money in the betting pool and the number of people who have bet into the pool. As an example, if there was a pool of $1,000 and 20 people that have placed bets into that pool. This would produce a dividend and $50 which would then be paid out based on how many units each person has wagered. If one person bet 5 units, they get $250 or if one person bet 0.5 unity, then they get $25.

The History of Horse Racing In South Dakota

South Dakota has a great horse racing history. Racing at the Stanley County Fairgrounds track in Fort Pierre has been a steady winner since 1948 with races each year until the funding died out after 2018.

Fort Pierre South Dakota horse racing dates back 200 years, counting American Indian tribes who have used the area for meeting and racing. In 1895, there were new stories about a race scheduled for two horses for a purse of $2k (that purse would be worth about $60k today).

Since 1987, there has been a source of most of the financing for horse racing in the state which for a couple of decades or more has consisted of two days on each of a couple weekends each spring in Fort Pierre and in Aberdeen for South Dakota horse racing. The first fair, known as the Tri-State Fair opened its gates on September 5th, 1921. When it opened, the fairgrounds which sits on 160 acres just north of Aberdeen, South Dakota had a lot to offer; it featured seats for 5,000 fans and overlooked one of the finest ½ mile dirt racing tracks in the area. Both horse racing and car racing were available here.

In 1933, financial problems started to create problems for the Tri-State Fair Association which caused the foreclosure. Brown County took control of the land and in 1935, the first Brown County Fair was held.

Since 1935, the Brown County Fairgrounds have continued to be a center of social gathering. The Verendrye Benevolent Association, a nonprofit has sponsored horse races at the Stanley County Fairgrounds since 1948.
