How do Belmont Stakes Odds Work?

belmont stakes odds table at BetUS

The vast majority of US horse races are paid out on a pari-mutuel basis. That means all the money wagered goes into a pool. You get one pool for the win, another for the exacta, another for the quinella, and so on. The industry takes its cut from this pool and divides the rest among bettors with winning tickets.

You will only find out the size of your winnings after the race when a dividend is revealed on the board. Pari-mutuel betting is available on the Belmont Stakes on the day of the race.

However, the Belmont is one of the rare races that sees bookmakers offer fixed-odds futures on the action. That is because it is such a famous race. When it comes to fixed odds, you know precisely how much you stand to win when you place your bet.

Explaining Belmont Stakes Odds

Fixed-odds futures on the Belmont Stakes will either be displayed in the American format or the fractional format. Most betting sites go for American odds because bettors are familiar with them. However, fractional odds are also popular in horse racing. We have broken down both formats below.

How to Read Belmont Stakes Odds

American odds begin with a plus sign or a minus sign. When it comes to horse racing, they normally begin with a plus. If that is the case, it tells you the profit you would earn by placing a successful $100 bet on a horse.

For example, a $100 bet on Creative Minister at odds of +750 would earn you winnings of $750 if he won the race. You also get your stake (bet amount) back if your bet wins, so your total return would be $850.

There is no need to bet $100, as that is a guide rather than a precise amount. For example, you could bet $10 to win $75 at odds of +750, or bet $200 to win $1,500.

Sometimes you will find that Belmont Stakes odds begin with a minus. That is the case if there is a heavy favorite, or if you are looking at head-to-head matchups. For example, you might find -150 on Mo Donegal to finish ahead of We the People.

A minus sign tells you the amount you need to wager to win $100. For example, if the odds are -150, you would need to wager $150 to generate a $100 profit. As always, you get your money back when the bet wins, so your return would be $250. Yet again, it is just a guide – you could bet $300 to win $200, or $20 to win $13.33.

Fractional Odds

You may find Belmont Stakes odds displayed in the fractional format. That is the case when the official track handicapper releases Morning Line odds on the day of the race. They are designed to give bettors a rough indication of the pari-mutuel payouts they would receive by betting on each horse to win.

If you want to calculate a payout from fractional odds, just multiply your stake by the fraction. For example, a $10 bet at 15/2 would earn a $75 profit, and thus a total return of $85. Fractional odds of 15/2, therefore, equate to American odds of +750.

Types of Belmont Stakes Odds Available

Belmont Stakes bets fall into two main groups – straight bets and exotic bets. We have broken both categories down for you:

Straight Bets

Straight bets only require you to name a single horse. In theory, it is easier to land a successful straight bet than an exotic bet. These are the straight betting options to choose from:

Win Bet

This is the most popular way to bet on the Belmont Stakes. It simply requires you to predict which horse will win the race. Most of the time, you only have one option, which is to place a pari-mutuel wager on the race. Your payout will then be revealed after the race when the win dividend is announced.

However, there is another option for big races such as the Belmont, the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Because it is a big race and the horses are all famous, bookmakers feel confident in their ability to offer fixed odds on the Belmont well in advance of the race.

It means you know precisely how much you stand to earn when you place your bet. If your chosen horse crosses the line first, you will receive a predetermined profit. It could be more than the pari-mutuel dividend or less.

Example: Mo Donegal to win the Belmont Stakes at +250.

Place Bet

A place bet is a prediction on a horse to finish either first or second in the Belmont. You may occasionally find fixed-odds futures on a horse to place, but that is very rare. Place bets tend to be paid out on a pari-mutuel basis, and they can only be placed during the 24 hours before the race begins.

It does not matter if your chosen horse finishes first or second, as your payout will be the same either way. It is naturally easier to pick a horse to place rather than to win, so you will receive a smaller payout if successful.

Example: Mo Donegal to place in the Belmont Stakes at $1.90.

Show Bet

A show bet is a prediction on a horse to finish first, second or third in the Belmont. Once again, it does not matter where your chosen horse finishes within the top three, as that will not affect the payout. A show bet will lead to a smaller payout than a win or place bet.

Example: Mo Donegal to show in the Belmont Stakes at $1.55.

Across The Board

Another option is an across-the-board bet. It is actually three separate wagers – one on the win, one on the place, and another on the show. A $20 across the board would cost you $60, for instance.

If your horse wins, all three parts of the bet pay out. However, if it finishes second, the place and the show pay out, and if it is third, only the show pays.

Example: $10 across the board bet on Ethereal Road at the Belmont Stakes.

Double Bet

A Daily Double bet involves picking the winning horse in two separate races. They are normally consecutive races. Alternative options include a Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5, and so on, and your potential profit will increase with each extra leg you add.

When it comes to the Belmont, a common double is a wager on the horse that will win the Grade 1 Hill ‘n’ Dale Metropolitan Handicap and the horse that will win the Belmont Stakes the following day.

Some people consider a double to be an exotic bet, as it is just like a parlay for sports bettors.

Example: Knicks Go to win the Hill ‘n’ Dale Metropolitan Handicap and Mo Donegal to win the Belmont Stakes.

Exotic Wagers

Exotic wagers require you to pick more than one horse. It is harder to come up with winning exotic bets, so your payouts will be larger if you nail it. These are the key Belmont Stakes exotic bets to consider:

Exacta Bet

An exacta is a bet on the horse that will win the Belmont Stakes and the horse that will finish second. You need to state the exact order in which they will finish the race. That gives the bet its name.

The exacta is paid out as a $2 dividend. After the race. For example, a $2 exacta on Essential Quality and Hot Rod Charlie paid out $15 in the 2021 Belmont Stakes. If you placed a $10 bet on those two horses, you would have earned a $75 return.

To make it easier for yourself, you can group several horses in a box and place a series of exactas on them. Just do not add too many, as your total bet amount could end up exceeding the payout if one of them lands.

Example: Mo Donegal to win the Belmont Stakes and Ethereal Road to finish second.

Quinella Bet

A quinella is an intriguing alternative to an exacta. You simply select two horses, and they can finish first or second in either order, which makes it easier. It does not matter which horse wins and which horse finishes second, as that will not affect your payout.

This wager is similar to a boxed exacta featuring two horses, but you will receive a different payout, as the quinella dividend comes out of a separate pari-mutuel pool.

Example: Mo Donegal and Ethereal Road in a Belmont Stakes quinella.

Trifecta Bet

A trifecta on the Belmont Stakes requires you to pick the winner, the runner up, and the horse that will finish third. It is just like an exacta, as you must specify their exact finishing order, but your payout will be greater.

A $1 trifecta on Essential Quality, Hot Rod Charlie, and Rombauer at the 2021 Belmont Stakes paid $21.70. That means a successful $10 trifecta would have returned $217.

You can also place boxed trifectas featuring multiple combinations to boost your chances of success.

Example: Mo Donegal to win the Belmont Stakes, Ethereal Road to finish second and Creative Minister to finish third.

Superfecta Bet

A superfecta takes it one step further by requiring you to name the first four horses to finish the Belmont Stakes. You need to state the order in which they will cross the line.

The superfecta is even harder to predict than the trifecta, so payments are larger. A $1 superfecta on the 2021 Belmont Stakes, which saw Known Agenda finish fourth, paid $60.70. A $10 bet on it would therefore have returned $607.

Example: Mo Donegal to win the Belmont Stakes, Ethereal Road to finish second, Creative Minister to finish third, and Rich Strike to finish fourth.

Super Hi-Five Bet

This is a rare type of exotic bet that allows you to name the first five horses to cross the line at the Belmont. That is very difficult, so you would be in line for a large payment if you pulled it off.

Example: Mo Donegal to win the Belmont Stakes, Ethereal Road to finish second, Creative Minister to finish third, Rich Strike to finish fourth, and We The People to finish fifth.

Our Belmont Stakes Odds Expert Picks

The Belmont Stakes is the third leg of the Triple Crown, so most bettors scrutinize the previous two races for clues about how it will unfold. Rich Strike, an 80/1 long-shot, pipped red-hot favorite Epicenter to win the Kentucky Derby, with Zandon third, Simplification fourth, Mo Donegal in fifth, and Barber Road sixth.

Rich Strike skipped the Preakness, but Epicenter finished second yet again, with Early Voting seizing glory. Creative Minister was third, ahead of Secret Oath in fourth and Skippylongstocking in fifth. However, it is also important to remember that the Belmont is longer than those races, so horses with strong stamina tend to thrive.

With that in mind, we have produced our Belmont Stakes expert picks for the race:

Winner: Mo Donegal

Mo Donegal finished 5 3/4 lengths behind Rich Strike in the Kentucky Derby, so he needs to make up a considerable amount of ground. However, he was bumped with a furlong on a half remaining, so he could perform better with a cleaner run in the Belmont. Mo Donegal also finished that race with a flourish and looked like he wanted a longer trip.

Mo Donegal Belmont Stakes Favorite

Since then, we have seen Early Voting go on to win the Preakness. That is interesting because Mo Donegal beat Early Voting to win the Wood Memorial earlier this year. Everyone is now very excited about this late-running colt, and with good reason. His style is perfectly suited to the race, and historical trends are on his side.

Favorites have won this race in three of the past four years. Around two-thirds of Belmont winners in the 21st century competed in the Kentucky Derby and skipped the Preakness Stakes. Mo Donegal has followed that path, so he should be fresh. Finishing outside the money in the Derby is not a problem, as he will be stronger over a mile and a half at Belmont Park.

Place: Ethereal Road

Ethereal Road was scratched at the last minute for the Kentucky Derby. That allowed Rich Strike, a reserve, to take his place – and the rest is history. Ethereal Road may only be remembered as a bit-part player in Rich Strike’s astonishing story… unless, that is, he goes on to win the Belmont.

He romped to victory in the $100,000 Sir Barton Stakes, and he is another horse that should suit a step up in trip. If he is at full fitness for this race, he will be a serious contender, and the Belmont Stakes odds available on him are very appealing.

Show: Creative Minister

Creative Minister’s owners paid a hefty $150,000 fee to make him eligible for the Preakness after a low-key start to 2022. That decision paid off, as Creative Minister finished third, earning $181,500 from the total purse of $1.65 million.

The next stop is the Belmont for a horse on an upward curve. He lacks experience, but that made his third-place finish in the Preakness even more impressive. Creative Minister now looks capable of showing in the Belmont.

Past Belmont Stakes Winners’ Odds

Favorites have dominated the Belmont Stakes in recent years. Three of the last four have triumphed, including 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify. American Pharaoh also started as the heavy favorite when he seized the Triple Crown in 2015, but prior to that, favorites had a poor record in this race.

The longest odds winner in the past decade was Palace Malice, who was priced at 15/1 in the Belmont winner odds back in 2013. The last 10 winners have come from the top seven in the Belmont odds, so it might be wise to discount the long-shots.

Year Winning Horse Jockey Trainer Odds
2021 Essential Quality Brad H. Cox Luis Saez 2/1
2020 Tiz the Law Barclay Tagg Manuel Franco 6/5
2019 Sir Winston Mark Casse Joel Rosario 12/1
2018 Justify Bob Baffert Mike Smith 4/5
2017 Tapwrit Todd A. Pletcher Jose L. Ortiz 6/1
2016 Creator Steve M. Asmussen Irad Ortiz, Jr. 10/1
2015 American Pharoah Bob Baffert Victor Espinoza 3/4
2014 Tonalist Christophe Clement Joel Rosario 8/1
2013 Palace Malice Todd Pletcher Mike Smith 15/1
2012 Union Rags Michael Matz John Velazquez 6/1
